With those overly realistic eyebrows and blondish hair, that woman would not be considered a beauty by Heian standards. And as for the man - he doesn't look plump at all!

I’ve seen some of the anime. So far, everyone has black hair. But the lack of plumpness in the men did take some time to get used to. But I think the men are drawn that way to appeal to the modern viewers and their ideal of an attractive anime man.
Oh, definitely. I doubt modern viewers would find a plump, pale, very effeminate man quite as attractive as Heian women did.
