What does Heian mean?

The Heian period of Japanese history (794-1192) should be better known to Westerners. The period gave us the world’s first novel, and could be considered one of the most aesthetically oriented societies the world has ever known. But what would happen if we modern day Westerners attempted to apply Heian etiquette and mores to our everyday lives?
